Give thanks

I learned a valuable lesson about perspective and moving on two days ago. i was sort of complaining to a friend that i was a little under the clouds during NY eve and NY day because both days were almost identical to the year before with familiar faces and even one of the events was at the same venue, and they reminded me of some not-so-pleasant memories.

This friend told me off and said instead of being upset about it, i should have given thanks that i was still able to spend significant events with familiar faces. He said it's not easy for friendships to stay together without one or two moving on and letting go of the rest.

His words stayed in my mind for a few moments and i realised he was right. instead of looking at the negative, i should have been thankful that i still got my friends with me. it is true that people move on and sometimes, they don't bring along others with them. i have had experience of friends whom i've known for years who let me go because we no longer go on the same path. i too have let go of some chums whom i no longer share common grounds with.

I should have been glad that i was able to end and start the year with friends who mean a lot to me, who have stayed by me and who i can count on for the coming 365 days. actually, it's a great way to close and start the year because it indicates that i'm not alone in my journey of life.

Ironically, the friend who taught me this is someone that have moved on and who probably will never be the same friend cos i have also let him go. but it doesn't mean that we still can't teach one another a thing or two ... :)
