Tunku the Musical didn't have Tunku as its main character. instead, images of him were shown on screen in between live performance. I quite liked how the musical was staged. The play on lights, the huge LCD screens, the huge hand of Tunku as prop at the beginning and the voting boxes used during the election scene.
The cast was great in their acting. particularly liked Tony Eusoff and Doreen Tang's performances in their respective roles. i must say, the rape scene was rather dramatic; i wondered if it's gonna be a trademark of CY (and his partner in crime, KG). i remembered that the main female lead in Broken Bridges also died very tragically ...
As for the songs, the finale was aptly sung .. truly be blind - COLOUR BLIND ... the irony of the story - Syed, who disliked other races, is having an affair with a woman that is non-Malay and his son is in love with a Chinese girl brought up in a Malay family. even in those days, multiracial relationships are un-avoidable.
I'm not the sort of person who ponder too much on the past and what meaning it had been. to me, the future is more important, which i can do something about it. While Tunku the Musical was a good walk down memory on how this country was formed and united, i am more concerned at how this country will turn out to be 50 years down the road. What musical will then our children or grandchildren be seeing???
There are still many Syeds around and perhaps one of them will become lucky, and then, where does that leave the rest of us? or before that Syed gets his way, perhaps i too should follow the herd that had left or leaving the country for better opportunities and greener pastures with lesser biasness ... is the grass always greener on the other side?
